OCWDEA members,

Last night, Wednesday, May 20, 2026, more than 100 OCWDEA members showed up in person and online at the OCWD Board of Directors meeting to make sure your voices were heard before our contract is finalized. Six OCWDEA members and OCEA Labor Relations Representative Peyton Chambers addressed the Board during public comment.

Here’s what we said:

  • We built the District’s sterling reputation. Speakers reminded the Board that OCWD’s status as a global leader in water quality, water supply, and groundwater management is the direct result of the employees who do the work.
  • Wages are behind the market. Members spoke to how the market gap is felt at home, as rising inflation and cost of living continue to erode the value and purchasing power of employees’ earnings.
  • The District is in a strong position to act. OCWD’s financial strength and recent record-breaking water year create a clear opportunity to invest in the workforce that makes the District’s success possible.
  • Retention is at stake. Speakers shared what they’re hearing from co-workers who have left for higher pay elsewhere, and what it will take to keep skilled, experienced employees here.
  • Words need to be backed by action. Members thanked the Board for the collaborative tone of negotiations and asked the Board to match that tone with a fair agreement that reflects both the realities employees face today and the value they bring to the District’s success.

Your presence in that room mattered. The Board saw the faces of those who keep this District running. Thank you to all who showed up to stand with us.

We will continue to keep you updated as negotiations move toward a final agreement. Stay tuned to your email for our next update.

In Solidarity,

Your OCWDEA Negotiations Team
