Voice of OC Opinion: Smoller: Phasing in the Voter’s Choice Act

There are several advantages to the phased precinct approach. The first is local buy in. Many supervisors likely don’t like the Voter’s Choice Act because of perceived heavy handedness by Sacramento. In this approach, each county’s supervisors–not Sacramento legislators– decide the threshold for shuttering precincts.

 

OC Register: Costa Mesa and New Harbor Inn drop lawsuits against each other

The property generated 1,786 calls for police service in the five years prior to the complaint. Calls include responses for prostitution, the sale and possession of heroin and methamphetamine and someone found unconscious, possibly from a heroin overdose, in a room.

An internationally recognized purification system credited with turning wastewater into drinkable water in Orange County will begin the final stage of expansion with a $124 million investment from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, officials announced Wednesday, July 19.

 

Daily Pilot: Coast college district OKs resolution to change election system after lawsuit threats

The district, which runs Orange Coast College, Golden West College, and Coastline Community College, intends to complete the transition by Oct. 18, according to the resolution. The move will require approval from the California Community Colleges Board of Governors

Sacramento Bee: Teachers’ pension fund posts highest returns since 2014

The earnings eclipsed the 1.4 percent net return that CalSTRS reported a year ago, and the 4.8 percent gain the pension fund notched in the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2015. The numbers show that pension fund performance - as well as policy decisions – should be reviewed taking a long view.

 

LA Times: For young California homeowners, a proposed 2018 initiative could make buying a new house a lot less expensive

The proposal, which aims for a spot on the November 2018 statewide ballot, would allow homeowners of any age to carry a portion of their existing property tax rate across county lines when they purchase a new house.
