A string of protests against police violence in Orange County is challenging local officials to rethink police accountability and law enforcement’s role in politics and systemic public safety issues, right on time for budget season — where cities spend more on cops over other areas like youth programs, parks and libraries.

 

Voice of OC: Used nuclear storage facility at San Onofre raised concern over plan vulnerability

The supervisors’ action comes on the heels of a virtual meeting held last week by the San Onofre Community Engagement Panel about the plant’s vulnerability. The panel made up of local officials and community members advises the plant’s operators on the dismantling of the plant and meets at least four times a year.

Businesses along Pacific Coast Highway had boarded up their windows, onlookers emerged to watch as protesters with signs crowded both sides of the road under sunny skies. The air was filled with protesters’ chants and a cacophony of car horns honking their support.

Huntington Beach has 294 city employees currently eligible to retire. Chi said if at least 15% of them would participate in a CalPERS early retirement program, it would result in annualized savings of at least $6.2 million.

Daily Pilot: Another 100 coronavirus cases reported in Orange County, pushing total past 6,500

This brings the cumulative total of cases in the county to 6,574, with 717 of those cases being skilled nursing facility residents and 379 Orange County jail inmates. Three deaths were also reported Tuesday, bringing the total number to 150.

 

Voice of OC: County pushes to re-open community pools, may also reopen youth sports

Other large counties, including Los Angeles and Riverside, recently allowed the re-opening of pools at apartment complexes or owned by homeowners’ associations, as long as they follow health guidelines like requiring physical distancing and not allowing large groups

OC Register: Murder charge upgraded in Floyd case, 3 other cops charged

The Star Tribune reported that Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison would be upgrading the charge against Chauvin while also charging Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao with aiding and abetting second-degree murder. The newspaper cited multiple law enforcement sources familiar with the case who spoke on condition of anonymity.
