Court funding to be discussed in exclusive legislative briefing
Dear OCEA member,
Please join OCEA for an exclusive member event for OC Superior Court workers! OCEA is pleased to bring together two State Legislators who are uniquely qualified to talk about the issues facing the California Judicial Branch.
Please join State Senator Tom Umberg, Chair of the California Senate Judiciary Committee, and State Senator Josh Newman, Chair of the California State Senate Budget Sub-Committee #5 (Public Safety) for a special Legislative Briefing from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10.
The Governors proposed 2021 budget reflects increased funding for the Judicial Branch, and investment in areas that directly benefit OCEA members. Between now and May, the State Legislature will debate and formulate the final budget that will be sent to the Governor for final approval. OCEA and our legislative advocate at Aaron Read and Associates will lobby the legislature and provide testimony on the impact the budget has on OCEA members and their families. This briefing will bring together key decision makers from the State Legislature for an exclusive update, and allow for members to ask questions.
Sen. Umberg is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and three-term state legislator representing central Orange County. He served as a federal prosecutor and Deputy Drug Czar under the Clinton Administration. His military record includes leading the U.S. military effort to fight corruption in the Afghan Army and Police, for which he was awarded a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in a Combat Zone. Sen. Umberg has been a strong ally of working families and OCEA throughout his career.
Sen. Newman served in the U.S. Army as well, serving as an artillery officer. He founded an initiative, ArmedForce2Workforce,to assist young military veterans in the pursuit of rewarding, career-oriented employment following the completion of their own military service. As their representative to the State Senate, he successfully guided more than 20 pieces of legislation that supported veteran services and mental health resources, improved local schools, helped businesses create jobs, and protected open space. Josh has been a steadfast ally of OCEA and a champion on Court issues.
Senators Umberg and Newman are both allies but also problem solvers who are willing to work "across the aisle" with their colleagues to find solutions. But they can't do that without input from subject matter experts and frontline workers like you, so please consider taking part in this exclusive forum.
