YLEA Bargaining Update - October 15, 2021

Dear YLEA Member,

Your bargaining team submitted their latest proposal on Sept. 29, and it was brought to Council at the Oct. 12 meeting. We were informed that the Council did not develop its next proposal at that meeting, but instead asked City staff to conduct a financial analysis of the proposal. Due to the lack of a counter-proposal from the City, our next few bargaining meetings have been cancelled. We know the Finance Department is working hard to prepare the analysis for review at the October 19th Council meeting. If Council comes out of that meeting with a new proposal, we should be back at the bargaining table soon thereafter.

We believe that the fact that Council didn’t reject YLEA’s latest proposal, and instead asked for an analysis, is a positive sign. In our last email we communicated the goal of holding a ratification vote before November 1st. While we will still strive for that goal, much will depend on what emerges from the City Council’s October 19th meeting. Retroactivity continues to be on the table but there are no guarantees at this time.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact a YLEA Board member or OCEA staff member.

In Solidarity,

Rob Cavanaugh, YLEA President
Kate Spector, YLEA Vice President
Monse Garcia, YLEA Secretary
