Your Retirement Security: OCERS Jan. 2023 Recap
Dear OCEA member,
January was an eventful month at the Orange County Employees Retirement System (OCERS), the system that administers your pension benefits.
Trustee Adele Tagaloa’s Swearing In
The January meeting of the OCERS Board of Retirement began with the swearing in of Trustee (and OCEA Board of Directors member) Adele Tagaloa for a second term on the OCERS Board. Adele expressed her thanks and appreciation to everyone who voted for her re-election last October.
Adele is now Vice Chair of the Board and, together with OCEA First Vice President and longtime OCERS Trustee Chris Prevatt, provides OCEA members and other plan participants with a knowledgeable and experienced voice for employee retirement interests.
Not only does Adele represent you on OCEA’s Board of Directors, but she has used her position as an OCERS trustee to become a champion for your retirement security not just here in Orange County but also Statewide as Secretary of the State Association of County Retirement Systems.
Adele said it is a privilege to serve OCERS plan members for another term, adding that her objectives this term are to continue to educate members about the retirement system and its long-term goals, and to help ensure that your retirement benefits are administered safely and professionally.

OCERS 2022 Innovations and Process Improvements Report
During its January meeting OCERS CEO Steve Delaney presented the Board with the annual Innovations and Process Improvements Report, which showcases how the OCERS staff has developed ways to build “continuous improvement” into workflow.
“When implementing innovation and improving processes at OCERS, it’s not about doing more with less; it’s about doing better with the resources we have,” Delaney wrote in a report to the board. “We are not looking for complex strategies, which often add confusion; instead we look to make straightforward simple change and improvement that creates better results.”
The report detailed several key changes including:
-A New Member Services Quality Assurance Team
-Investment Team Reorganization
-Revamped New Employee Orientation
-Improved Succession Planning and Talent Development
-Cost Savings Measures Amounting to Nearly $2 Million in Savings
Full House for OCERS Retirement Seminar at OCEA
OCEA also had a full house for our first in-person “OCEA Members Only” event since the start of the pandemic, featuring OCERS staff!
The OCERS staff presentation provided OCEA members in attendance with a variety of important information about the retirement process including how to use the MyOCERS Portal, a review of the specific documents that must be submitted to OCERS, and a robust question and answer segment.
If you missed the seminar, OCERS staff repeats its presentation both in person at OCERS headquarters and on Zoom once monthly; both can be scheduled at the OCERS website. You can also find more OCERS resources at the links below. If you have additional questions related to your retirement, you can speak to an OCERS representative by calling 714-558-6200.
Stay tuned … we’ll have more OCERS updates next month!
In Solidary,
OCEA
