Putting politics aside to honor veterans with a final resting place

The current senseless battle over where Orange County’s veterans will be able to find their ultimate resting place is demonstrating that the very worst of political opportunism is alive and well in Orange County. But even more importantly, it is conversely providing a rare glimpse of the power of bipartisan action to do good.

For two months the OCEA Bargaining team has met with Court management eleven times to negotiate a contract for OCEA members. At each of these meetings your bargaining team has passionately communicated the position of OCEA members throughout the Court system. It is time to be treated fairly, and it is time for a meaningful wage enhancement!

Most mornings, I drive to work. Most other Californians do the same. We know our cars can be dangerous, so we use turn signals and follow the speed limits and yield to pedestrians. We purchase insurance and wear seat belts; decry drunk driving and mourn when accidents take lives.
California Chief Justice receives OCEA bargaining petitions

On Friday, Oct. 27 I attended a meeting in Buena Park featuring California Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye.

On Friday the OCEA bargaining team again met with the Superior Court. As you recall, at our last meeting we were able to make significant progress on classification specific items. At this meeting we intended to continue our ongoing discussion regarding wages.

Your OCEA contract with the County includes rights and benefits that have been negotiated by generations of County workers. Among those rights and benefits is the establishment of Labor Management Committees across the County where OCEA members, OCEA staff, and the County can meet regularly to address issues and make workplace improvement in specific departments and agencies.

This week, in the wake of a long list of sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, a social media campaign emerged asking women to take a simple and yet anything but simple action: Anyone who has experienced sexual assault or harassment was asked to post their experiences on social media, along with the hashtag #metoo.

Today we concluded another bargaining session with the Court. Though tense and emotional, this turned out to be one of the more productive days of bargaining during these negotiations.
Collection Officer Update

As you know, this past August the Treasurer/Tax Collectors office planned on changing the long standing practice of sending Collections Officers out in pairs. Upon hearing this news your OCEA Stewards immediately went into action. OCEA requested a delay on the implementation and demanded to meet on the issue.
