Volunteers Needed for Court Workgroup on Duties and Classifications

Dear OCEA member,

As you may know, OCEA secured a side letter during negotiations establishing a Labor Management Subcommittee to address something many of you have raised: the way courtroom duties have shifted since COVID.

New technology, Zoom hearings, and changing processes have blurred the lines between classifications. You told us this was a problem, and we fought to get this recognized in our contract. You can read the full side letter here.

Soon, the subcommittee will begin its work, which will occur in two phases.

Phase I will review how post-COVID changes have affected the duties of Legal Processing Specialists I/II, Superior Court Clerks I/II/III, Court Attendant Trainees/Court Attendants, and Jury Coordinators. The goal is to identify where duties have shifted and whether job descriptions need updates.

Phase II will review the Legal Processing Specialist I/II classification, including whether additional levels within the series should be created.

The Court is assembling their representatives, and we need ours.

WE ARE SEARCHING FOR FIVE MEMBER VOLUNTEERS TO BE ON THE COMMITTEE DURING PHASE 1.

We need OCEA members who are ready to collaborate with the Court, talk to co-workers about what’s happening in the workplace, come up with ideas, and focus on solutions. This is your chance to directly shape how your work is recognized and classified.

If you are interested, please send the following information to OCEA Labor Relations Specialist Molly Salazar at msalazar@ocea.org by 5 p.m. Friday, March 13:

  • Your Name
  • Your Classification
  • Your Hire Date with the Court
  • A Brief Note on Why You’re Interested

Submitting your name does not guarantee a spot on the subcommittee, but we want to hear from everyone who’s interested.

In Solidarity,

OCEA
