OMA members,
Our last day of action for Measures I and J is this Saturday, Oct. 24. OMA and OCEA are joining the OC Labor Federation and union members from across Orange County to talk with fellow union members in the City about why these two measures matter. We need you there.
Measure I would raise the City sales tax to 1%, creating an additional $37,000,000 per year in revenue for the City. Measure J would increase the City’s Transient Occupancy Tax, or “Hotel Guest Tax,” and is expected to create an additional $3,000,000 per year.
If voters approve both measures, the impact on our jobs, public services, and our ability to serve the residents of Orange will be significant. That is why we are acting!
WHAT TO EXPECT
You do not need any experience to canvass. Here is how the day will go:
- Arrive at 9 a.m. at the OC Labor Federation, 309 N. Rampart St., Orange. Breakfast and coffee will be ready.
- Training first. Before anyone heads out, we walk through the measures, the talking points, and the script together. You will have answers ready for the questions you are most likely to hear.
- You will have a list and a partner. Each volunteer gets a list of union members who live in the City. You will not be knocking on strangers’ doors. These are fellow union members who already understand why strong City finances matter to public employees.
- Most conversations are short and friendly. You are not there to debate anyone. You are there to make sure union households know Measures I and J are on the ballot and what they mean for City services.
- Wrap up by 1 p.m. with lunch back at the Labor Federation.
